Ostern

What is Ostern?

Ostern is the German word for "Easter." As in the United States, Ostern is the Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Christ. However, Ostern is less a commercial holiday than Easter in America. Ostern focuses more on family and spirituality.

When is Ostern celebrated?

The Easter holiday is celebrated on the same day worldwide: the first Sunday after the first full moon in spring. This day is 6 weeks after the start of Lent. In Germany, the start of Lent is celebrated on Fashing.

What are some Ostern traditions?

While it is still dark on Easter Morning, many communities build a large fire, called the Easter Fire. People of the community gather around the fire and light candles. They then bring the candles to Easter Mass.

Easter dinner traditionally consists of an Easter lamb and is usually celebrated with family members and close friends.

It is customary for German families to go on an Easter walk after dinner.

An Easter egg hunt for the children is a German custom, as well as an American custom. Some families cut branches from their garden and decorate them with Easter eggs.
